Year of the Pig

Year of the Pig

Tomorrow will mark the new year in the Lunar calendar, also known as Chinese New Year. I didn't realize this, but the date of of Chinese New Year changes from year to year, landing somewhere towards the end of January through mid-February.

Chinese astrology includes one animal sign - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig - and one of the five elements of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire or Earth which have either yin or yang energy. This year is a Yin Year (think cooling, calming, moistening, restful, and more feminine energy) and is represented by the Earth Element Pig.

Earth energy, being very yin, is quite grounding. Earth nurtures us through comfort, warmth and nourishment. The pig's energy is gentle, playful, intelligent and optimistic. They are seen as trustworthy and honest. This year is said to bring much happiness and good fortune.
